Double wall log house

Duo thermal log houses

Why to build a house with the double wall?

It is a solution combining all favourable characteristics that one´s home must have. Healthy and nature-friendly materials produce a good indoor climate. In addition, they keep energy costs low and the investment pays for itself quickly.

Duo thermal log wall is an exterior double wall made from two square logs and in between them an insulating material, usually blown wool, is used. Chosen insulation material needs to let pass humidity. As wood is organic breathing material, insulation material needs to have similar characteristics. This solution provides an effective insulation and reduces heating costs of the house to a minimum. Furthermore, it guarantees the normal humidity level of the inside air as the latter will not become too dry. Similarly to an ordinary log house, diseases and allergenic (pollution) substances cannot get into the double wall house. As it shows, timber buildings are good for human health in virtue of their natural characteristics. Wall details can be made of spruce or pine. Building works are more complicated compared with traditional log house.

In the picture there is double walled house in Germany. Granulated cork bark was used to insulate this house.

Facts:

  • In comparison with the so-called energy saving passive houses built of concrete and stone, the house with duo thermal log wall needs less ventilation, being healthy, economical and ecological at the same time.
  • Building of the double wall house consumes 80% less energy as treatment residues resulting from the timber treatment are made use of. On top of being a renewable resource, wood is releasing oxygen necessary for life into air.
  • Heating costs of a log house in winter remain low; its normal humidity and heat level in summer is retained without any aid of technology enhancements.

Planning rooms inside the house

Interior walls of the house are usually made from one log – that is three times thinner than the insulated double exterior wall. Exterior walls of auxiliary premises or utility rooms can also be built of a single log.

A well insulated roof and foundation together with energy efficient doors and windows are as important as double walls and make a house a warm and cosy one.

Below is illustrative sample of inner and outer wall connection.
